Is tea tree oil safe for my dog if he licks my face or skin?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | neutered | 8 months and 3 days old | 52 lbs

I have a Tea Tree Foam Face Wash that I would like to use every morning and night but my black lab tends to lick my face every now then during the day, so I'm just wondering if its okay for me to use the face wash around him. I am currently not using it in fear it might be toxic for him so I would really like to know if I can start using soon or if I should just avoid it. Also I sometimes use pure tea tree oil as a spot treatment for my pimples at night, is it safe for him for the next day?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I think it is fine to restart the face wash. As most face washes are rinsed after use I can't imagine much or if any tea tree oil remains on your face. I wouldn't let him lick your face immediately after using the wash to be safe. Maybe give it an hour. I wouldn't let him lick the concentrated tea tree oil for the pimples. And I would wash it off in the morning to be safe. I am sure if you accidentally forget and he licks your face he will be fine! I hope this helps and have a great weekend!
