My puppy had parvo. Can he get reinfected once he's home?

My pup comes home tomorrow from staying in the vet while getting through parvo. I have been cleaning and bleaching the cement outside and the soil. Is there a chance he can get it again after he comes home ?

It is unlikely. Parvo, like chicken pox in people, is in a class of viruses that once your get it and your body makes an immune response to it, you cannot get it again. Any other puppy that goes there can be exposed to it through if not adequately vaccinated.

    Yes she can now go out and play. She should have immunity from another infection of the same strain of parvovirus. If she's healthy now I would have her vaccinated against it just to give her the most protection. She should have another booster again in 3-4 weeks. It is in the same family as chicken pox for people, so once you get and build an immune response, you cannot get it again. The only catch to this is if the disease was not very aggressive and they were not very sick, then they may not have built an immune response. Yes, it is most definitely possible for them to contract parvo again, natural immunity is very unpredictable as the virus attacks the immune system during the disease hence reducing the chance of developing strong, lasting protection. Pups should be vaccinated at 6-8, 10-12 and again at 16weeks in areas of high infection risk and again 6-12months later then every 3 years in order to maintain a high level of immunity. Avoid areas visited by other dogs such as parks, sidewalks etc until after the third vaccine as the virus can survive in fecal contamination for up to 3months.

Immunity is generally quite strong after surviving parvo but there are additional diseases which should also be protected against so he should still receive his vaccinations. As parvovirus depletes the immune system during infection it would be advisable to delay vaccines for 4-6weeks and to keep him isolated from other dogs in the meantime so he does not contract additional infections whilst he is recuperating. He is also a risk to other dogs for 3-6weeks as he will continue to shed parvovirus and be a potential source of infection for others so he should be kept in an enclosed area and all faeces disposed of responsibly to reduce the risk of spread

My puppy had parvo virus. If I bring a fully vaccinated dog here, can it infect the new dog? Is there still a risk?
If they new dog is a year old and you are completely sure that that it is 100 percent vaccinated there is a very minimal risk that it will be infected. However, that being said, vaccines are never 100 percent effective so there is always a 0.09 percent chance that the new dog could get the virus. But you should be safe bringing the new dog home. I would make sure that the home environment has been cleaned as thoroughly as possible (this means with bleach to all surfaces) and make sure that the outdoor surfaces have been cleaned as well. Parvo can live in the environment for an annoyingly long time (up to 6 months) so it wouldn't hurt to apply a safe mixture of bleach product to your yard as well. This is probably going completely overboard, but you know how scary parvo can be!

My dog caught parvo when he was a puppy. He's about to be 3, can he get it again in any way?
It's possible he can get it again, but very unlikely. They usually have long-standing immunity when they recover from parvo and older dogs are less-likely to get it than younger dogs anyways. However, to be safe, it's best to ensure that he is getting his parvo vaccine every three years to ensure his immunity is continually boosted. I hope that helps and all is well with Bowser.

Once a dog have parvo, they are immune to it and do not get it again. Only in very rare cases has a dog gotten it twice. If Nash was fully recovered from the parvo when she had her puppies, then they would not have gotten it.

No, Doria cannot be infected with [parvovirus](https://www.petcoach.co/article/spaying-ovariohysterectomy-the-benefits-in-dogs/) a second time after having survived [parvovirus infection](https://www.petcoach.co/article/canine-parvovirus-7-things-to-know) once. A dog or puppy that has recovered from parvo infection cannnot get infected a second time. Studies have shown immunity lasts at least 3 years, but the pup may be considered immune for the rest of its life due to natural antibodies towards the virus.

How long does parvo stay in the yard for and will my dog get parvo again?
It is unlikely that your dog will get parvo again, but I would make sure she has had all of her proper booster even after being treated. She will need to get a parvo vaccine yearly after that. Parvo can stay in the yard for up to a year without living in a host so I do not recommend bringing in any new puppies that aren't fully vaccinated (boosters every 3 weeks until they are ~15-16 weeks old) into your yard. Hello, thank you for your question about Hazel. If Hazel has been previously infected and then vaccinated the chance that she could experience a re-infection is very unlikely as she should now have good immunity against this virus. I would recommend keeping Bolt and Hazel separated though while Bolt is sick with parvovirus. Parvovirus makes dogs predisposed to developing other significant infections. Hope this helps, good luck!

It would be extremely unlikely for a dog that has survived parvovirus to be affected again - the virus provides such excellent immunity that some veterinarians will take serum from recovered dogs to give transfusions to those affected with the disease (although this may or may not help). There are many other diseases that could cause diarrhea with that distinctive parvoviral smell. If the diarrhea is severe I'd recommend seeing your veterinarian who can run some tests to determine what might be causing his diarrhea this time around and start some treatment.
