My dog is limping after a vaccine shot. Is this a side effect?

Hello, my dog got her rabies/distemper shot on Saturday but then I noticed on Tuesday that she started to have a limp on the leg where she was shot. She’s in no pain whenever she walks on it and I’ve felt the leg and saw no swelling. It’s currently Thursday and she still has a limp although it looks like it’s improving. Is it possible that the limp is a side effect from the shot?

Thank you for your question regarding Molly! Small breed dogs can experience some pain at a vaccine injection site. In my experience, it typically resolves in a day or two. So this has gone on a bit longer than I would expect. If she is otherwise acting normal and the lameness continues to improve, then it is likely soreness for her vaccine. If she isn't acting well or the lameness persists, she should see her veterinarian. In that case, her lameness would be due to another cause. I hope this information helps you and Molly!

When vaccines are given they do elicit an inflammatory response. This can cause a dog or cat to be painful in the area of the injection. Some does will yelp when touched on their leg or even limp. I would not be concerned as long as the limping resolves in 24 hours. If you notice any facial swelling or vomiting I would recommend taking Dottie back to the vet for a possible vaccine reaction
