Why is my dog's mammary gland swollen, not eating, and depressed?

Poor silver! She could be pregnant (unless y'all have watched her 100% of the time she is outside) or she could be going through a false pregnancy (they think they are pregnant and will show similar signs of swollen mammary glands, nesting, whining, etc). She could also have an infection in her mammary tissues. I would recommend to contact your vet for an exam to confirm that she isn't pregnant and see what is going on. If she is not pregnant it can be a false pregnancy. Their body will go through all the changes as if they were pregnant without the birth. If this is the case then it will resolve with time after her hormones settle down.

Mishti may be having what we call a "False Pregnancy". It occurs because their bodies release some of the same hormones that will occur with pregnancy, so she may actually think that she is/was pregnant. Hello. If this is a false pregnancy, there really is nothing much you can do at home. Unless you are going to use her for breeding, spaying will prevent this from happening again, but if you do not want to spay her, this will not cause any loss in fertility if you decide to breed her in the future. If her symptoms are mild, it is best not to do anything at all, as any stimulation of the nipples by applying warm compresses or wrapping them to prevent milk leakage will just stimulate more swelling & milk production. If she is licking herself, you may need to put a cone or E collar on her. If she really seems to be uncomfortable or there is a lot of leakage, sometimes we will treat these dogs with diuretics or even hormones. So, see how she does & see your vet if the situation worsens. There are a few things that could be going on: 1. She could be having a false pregnancy. 2. She could be having a real pregnancy. 3. She could have a uterine infection - called pyometra. 4. She could have something completely unrelated to the reproductive tract. I think you should get her a vet for an exam. If she is pregnant you need to know about it so you can estimate when she may give birth. If she has a uterine infection this can be life-threatening and she needs to get treatment ASAP. I agree though that her vulva appears swollen. Depending on how long ago her heat cycle was it can mean several things. If the cycle was recent, the swelling may not have had time to reduce yet. If her cycle was months ago, she could be starting her next cycle. If you have seen tissue protruding from the vuvla, then a vaginal prolapse could be the cause. Finally, she could be experiencing a false pregnancy. She will likely need to see her veterinarian to differentiate between these causes and to determine why she is exhibiting the behavioral changes. In an older dog a swelling like this around the teat is most often a mammary lump. 50% are benign and 50% cancerous in dogs. They can be closely linked to hormones hence the fluctuation in size. Other causes would be mastitis or mammary development, but this photo does look like a lump. It can be tested by the vet to know what sort it is.

Willow's mammary chain appears to be developing which can be a sign of pregnancy or a false pregnancy. If a mammary gland swells up within an hour the cause is usually either trauma, or an insect bite or even a snake bite. If the swelling has been there for a longer time or developed over a longer time, then this could be a cyst or an abscess or a mammary tumor.
