My dog has high ALT liver enzymes. What tests and treatment are next?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Toy Poodle | Male | neutered | 4 years and 6 months old | 9 lbs

I have a 4-year-old toy poodle who I had neutered about 6 weeks ago. I had preanesthetic blood work done, which showed elevated ALT liver tests. We retested last week, and it went up more. I believe it went up from 140 to 220. However, my dog is a asymptomatic and happy as can be. I opted to recheck again in 3 months, but I am a little worried. What tests would be the next step? What would be looking for exactly? And what is the treatment for liver problems?

There are many things which can cause raised alt, including recent surgery/inflammation. A liver function test and ultrasound exam of the liver may be considered if continuing to rise. A liver support tonic such as zentonil or milk thistle may be considered in the meantime
