Why does my dog have swollen, red eyelids, a bump, and eye discharge?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Bichon Frise | Male | 12 lbs

I just noticed that my old Bichon Frise has swollen eyelids and a small bump on his upper right eyelid. He has a red eye on his right eye. And he often roll around on the floor and end up with blood on his eyelids. There is black discharge from his eyes too.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This could be due to an eye injury or conditions such as a corneal laceration, corneal ulcer, conjunctivitis, dry eye (also known as KCS), among many other conditions. I highly recommend that you have Mika evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Further therapy would be based on the findings. Good luck and best wishes!

The tumour could be having an effect, however it could be completely unrelated. It sounds a lot like conjunctivitis which can be easily treated by your vet. I would get Bella in for an exam asap as you dont want to leave an eye condition as it may be more serious.
