My dog's tooth is loose and gums are red. Is monitoring enough?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 9 years and 3 months old | 9.6 lbs

Benji went to Vet today for routine exam. The Vet always checks his teeth. He said the upper fourth premolar tooth is alittle loose. Gum slightly red but all the rest of his teeth are doing great since his dental cleaning last year. Is there a chance that everything will be okay for Benji with this tooth or is it certain to cause him problems down the line? I asked his Vet he said we just need to monitor it. Now i am really nervous. Any info/advise/input would be greatly appreciated.

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. If Benji has a loose tooth, it may indicate infection. It sounds as though he may have dental disease already from last year's cleaning. I would recommend having his teeth cleaned again and have this tooth that is loose addressed. If the tooth is left in the mouth and is infected, it is likely that the infection could spread to the surrounding teeth and cause issues with those teeth as well. I hope this helps! Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns and I would be more than happy to help you further.
