Why is my dog having frequent small, soft poops but acting normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | unneutered | 4 months and 24 days old | 3 lbs

My dog is pooping very little but many times his poop is wet and soft. There is no change in behavior and still very active and no change in eating.

Good Evening....thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! When dogs are frequently straining to poop, this can indicate irritation within the large bowel of the intestines - this is called tenesmus (or straining). Diarrhea may be coming, so be on the lookout! If signs persist more than 12-24 hours, you may want to consider a veterinary exam. I hope this helps, good luck!
