Absolutely. Actually, neutering is one way to treat a prostate hyperplasia (enlarged prostate). It should not affect him negatively. His prostate should get smaller, and he will not have any more discharge from his prepuce. If your dog has an inflamed prostate, it still needs treatment with an antibiotic prescribed by your vet.

Neutering is the treatment of choice for benign prostatic hyperplasia and cases of abscess or infection. In some cases the prostate or prostatic cysts can enlarge and block urine flow out of the urethra resulting in a life threatening emergency. I strongly recommend neutering any male dogs with these isssues unless they are an extremely valuable breeding dog. Other than some discomfort after surgery which can be medically managed, neutering should only positively impact Max's quality of life. There may be an option of medical hormonal therapy for BPH but this is a lifelong medication and if stopped the prostate enlargement will recur. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Baloo! I am in agreement with your Vet. In an intact male dog with recurrent urinary tract infections or bleeding, the prostate being enlarged will likely always be blamed. Testosterone causes enlargement of the prostate and if it gets too large it can cause difficulty with urinating and/or defecation. The enlargement can be benign or be from inflammation or infection (abscessed) or it could be from prostate cancer. Both neutered and un-neutered dogs are equally susceptible to prostate cancer. So there are MORE reasons TO get him neutered than not to. If he has prostate cancer, you are right, neutering will not help him. But then, really nothing will. If he was my dog I would get him neutered. He is still a young healthy guy and hopefully the odds are in his favor! Good luck!

Hi there. Yes, having Boomer neutered should prevent any further issues with prostatitis, and will also prevent any issues with BPH (benign prostatic hypertrophy, or an enlarged prostate). Neutering in dogs does NOT prevent prostate cancer, so that's the only common prostate-related issue that he would still be at risk for after having the neuter surgery.
