Why is my dog constantly panting and uncomfortable on UTI antibiotics?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pug | Female | unspayed | 1 year and 9 months old | 18 lbs

Hi Layla is constantly panting (she's not hot) she has been panting for the past 2 hours. She's normally sleeping at this time. What could this be? She's been on antibiotics for a week for UTI. She looks really uncomfortable.

Poor Layla. We will commonly see panting associated with pain or discomfort. If she is on antibiotics for a UTI this could be from bladder discomfort if her UTI has not resolved, GI discomfort from the antibiotics or something unrelated. If her clinical signs from her UTI are improved, then it would make it less likely that is causing a problem, but it is still a possibility. It might not be a bad idea to have your veterinarian check another urine sample on her to make sure that her UTI is resolving. That may be the first step in trying to figure out what is going on with her. I would closely monitor her appetite and stools as well. Good luck! I hope that was helpful and you can figure out what is going on with Layla. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
