Pet's info: Dog | Jack Russell Terrier | Male | neutered | 25 lbs
My dog is suffering with a gastric infection that is not getting better with antibiotics he was prescribed. We took him back to the vet and he was given a stronger antibiotic injection and IV fluids. He has a high fever. I requested blood cultures to identify the organism causing this infection but the vet said blood cultures were useless on dogs because they are garbage disposals and would show positive for many organisms. Does this sound like best practice or would you advise a second opinion?

There are many causes for fever other than bacterial infection, viruses, inflammatory diseases and autoimmune conditions can also contribute. Blood cultures are not an efficient test unless there is an overwhelming blood borne bacterial infection such as septicaemia and fecal cultures can become overwhelmed with normal/ non-disease causing bugs but if not responding, a fecal culture and microscopic exam may identify underlying causes but should be at least 5days after the last antibiotic. Specialist diets, fiber and probiotic supplement such as fortiflora could also be considered
