What's this dark, rough, hairless spot on my dog's cheek? Vet needed?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 1 year and 3 months old | 50 lbs

I just noticed that my dog has a dark rough spot on her cheek that has no hair. When I first saw it, it was red and small. Now, it has grown in size and changed color. I want to see if its something worrisome and if I can cure it at home or if I need to go to the vet. She's a german shephard/ husky mix that is a little over a year. She is current on all her shots, spayed, and micro-chipped. when she was younger we had to de-worm her a few times. She scratches often but gets flea/tick medication.

This is suspicious of ringworm (a fungal infection of the skin). This could also be due to a yeast or bacteria infection. It's best to get it diagnosed by a veterinarian, because ringworm can spread to different parts of the body and can spread to people. Also, the more involved the infection, the longer it will take to clear. For now, I recommend washing your hands anytime you touch Rexi. For more information about ringworm and how to prevent spread, please click on the links below: https://www.petcoach.co/article/ringworm-in-dogs/ https://www.cdc.gov/healthypets/diseases/ringworm.html I hope that helps and Rexi gets better soon.
