My happy dog can't walk. How to find a vet for comfort care?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pembroke Welsh Corgi | Male | neutered | 16 years and 11 months old | 27 lbs

My vet just suggested that we consider euthanizing my dog, and I am offended. I just switched the vet since my previous one seemed to have given up on him, and now my currnt one also! My dog can't stand up and has incontinence, but he still LOVES eating and interacting. His vision is great and all his insides are working fine. No vomiting, seizure or pain. Why do I have to convince the vet so they won't kill our dog? How can I find a vet who would work with me so my dog can LIVE comfortably?

I recommend seeing a rehab veterinarian. They will help you manage his care and can offer massage, exercise, laser and often acupuncture to keep him comfortable. They can fit him for a cart if he’s strong enough so he can go outside for walks with you. I’m a rehab veterinarian and I would never discuss euthanizing a happy dog unless he’s suffering with pain or sores. Learning how to keep him clean and happy is what we do so find a rehab veterinarian near you and take him there for treatment. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to help you care for Jackie.
