My young dog is drinking more water and peeing more. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 1 year and 4 months old | 80 lbs

My dog has been drinking way more water than usual and peeing more often in the last couple days. He normally sleeps through the night but I had to let him out twice last night after he finished two bowls of water. He’s so young, I don’t understand what’s going on with him.

There are a number of things that can cause a dog to drink more and urinate more. Unfortunately, there isn't any way to know what is causing the problem without doing some testing. Usually the first test will be to have your veterinarian evaluate a urine sample. That may be able to tell us what is going on, but if it doesn't, then they may also need to check some blood work. I would recommend having your veterinarian examine Moose today to figure out what is going on with him, so you can start treatment and get some sleep tonight. Good luck! I hope that was helpful.
