My kitten's spay incision is splitting and draining. Is this normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | spayed | 4 months and 19 days old

My rescue kitten was spayed today & had 2 layers of absorbable stitches & then surgical glue on the superficial skin layer. She hasn’t been active since the surgery & has spent the night/last 5 hours under my bed. I’ve inspected the wound & have noticed the skin layer splitting open with some blood-plasma drainage. No heat or redness around the wound. She isn’t licking at the wound & will have an e-collar on tomorrow during the day. Is the wound shown in the photos typical of spaying wounds?

The first and last pictures you posted appear more open than I would expect for a surgical incision, so I would be worried that the skin layer is open. I would recommend having her examined if possible and determine if anything needs to be done. And having her wear an e-collar consistently is necessary as well to make sure she is not licking at the incision. It does not appear infected yet, but will be susceptible to infection if it is open and she has the opportunity to lick at it. Good luck! I hope that was helpful.
