My French Bulldog puppy has a sore tail. What should I do to help?

Pet's info: Dog | French Bulldog | Female | unspayed | 6 months and 20 days old | 26 lbs

My French Bulldog puppy of 7 months is very sore under her tail . I have cleaned it with antibacterial wipes and put Savolin antiseptic cream on but is there anything else I can do?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Betty! If it is a moist dermatitis around or under her tail the best thing is to prevent licking by using an E-collar, start her on an oral antibiotic and steroid course to dry it out. Without seeing a picture or examining her it is hard to know what the inciting cause is: has she been scooting and has full anal glands? Is is allergies. It is best to make an appointment with your Vet since it hasn't improved. Otherwise give your treatment several days to see if it will help then take her in.     Ouch! That does look sore. At this point I would likely call that moist dermatitis which is a skin infection that needs antibiotics. Certainty a bite or sting can start it off. Also, they have a tail gland about 1/3 of the way down the tail that can become infected. It is hard to tell from the picture where on the tail this is. I would encourage you to have her evaluated by your veterinarian soon. In the meantime if she will let you out a warm water and Epsom salt compress on it that may improve her comfort. Thanks for using Boop by Petco! I'm sorry to hear Belka is having issues with her skin. Open sores on the skin under the tail can be secondary to fleas, but can also be due to infected or impacted anal glands, among others. If she has active sores, they may require antibiotics and an anti-itch medication to resolve, as well as treating any underlying flea issue. She may also need to wear a cone collar to prevent him from licking/chewing at the area and re-aggravating it. I would recommend she be evaluated by her regular veterinarian and then can start on any medications (antibiotics, etc) that she may need to help resolve it. Good luck!

Hi my american bulldog is 22 weeks old and has come out in a random red sore on his underbelly
Thanks for using Boop by Petco! This looks like a focal infection. At least in this picture it appears to be superficial. Make sure that this is not from urine getting into that part of the skin and if it is, have him evaluated by a veterinarian. You can try to use a medicated shampoo containing chlorhexidine twice weekly for 2 weeks. If there is no improvement or in the meantime this appears to be getting worse, have him evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Good luck and have a good day!

Thanks for using Boop by Petco! This is likely a perianal or anal sac abscess or even a mass. How this is treated, will depend on what it actually is. However, it usually does not represent an emergency. If it is an abscess, drainage and flushing of it as well as antibiotics may be indicated. I recommend that you have her evaluated by a veterinarian when possible if not open today for further assessment and treatment. They would be able to check for these possibilities and treat accordingly. Good luck and have a great day!

how can I treat the underside of my English Bulldogs screw tail? It got irritated by not rinsing well enough during a bath, Now it is kind of juicy and very itchy for him. Can I use a ptoduct called Nu Stock?
You can apply that medicine but it might not be strong enough. You can always try cortisone cream if it is red and inflamed or Neosporin if it is infected, which is sounds from the discharge you describe. If it is very moist from being in a skin fold sometimes medicated powder helps dry it out. You can also try creams for diaper rashes if it is in a skin fold. If there is no improvement or it seems to bother him to where he makes it worse, then he may need to be seen for oral medication.

My dog has started biting her tail, it looks very sore and she won’t let me near it. I’m wondering if she’s been bitten by something

Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Poor Remy! Remy likely has allergies or an ear infection. He should see your Vet to help figure out why is is so extremely itchy. Ear infections are diagnosed on ear exam and cytology of the waxy debris in the ears. Allergies are sadly very common in French Bull dogs and can be managed and not cured. We usually manage them with omega 3 fish oils, antihistamines, apoquel or cytopoint for the scratching, a diet change in case it is a food allergies and antibiotic or anti-yeast medications if there is an active skin infection. A skin scrape should also be done to be sure he doesn't have mites like scabies which is VERY itchy. Remy sounds absolutely miserable and needs Veterinary care. I wish you both the best!

Hi, I had my frenchie on my lap and noticed she left a small blood stain on my pants. Upon checking its not her "period" I looked at the other side and found where the blood comes from and some redness and blackness (not her heces) and a tiny pimple.
Thank you for contacting Boop by Petco with your question about Sushi and for providing a picture, it's very helpful. I LOVE her name! I think it looks like irritation. Try giving her an Epsom salt bath to see if that helps. Use a cup of Epsom salt per gallon of warm water and let her soak in it. Do not let her drink the solution. If this does not help or it gets worse, have her seen by a vet. I hope this helps!

my dog is 14mths French bulldog I have I have recently wormed him and flea And tic him. I have noticed his fur is falleing out. And he keeps rub his back end near his bum..
Thanks for using Boop by Petco! This is possibly due to allergies. It really comes down to figuring out what is causing his allergies so that they can be treated or the specific allergen avoided. A secondary infection is likely and also needs to be addressed. There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). If that does not seem to be the issue then you are left out having to check for envir

My 7 month frenchie has these sores on his belly and genital area, what could it be? He licks what he can reach but other than that it doesn’t seem to bother him.
Thank you for submitting your question regarding Elvis. I recommend that he sees his veterinarian today as his skin appears uncomfortable. He could be experiencing a skin infection secondary to allergies, fleas, or a problem due to ringworm or mites. His veterinarian will examine him and may recommend skin tests. From there, medications can be prescribed to help him feel better. In the meantime, you can bathe him with a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner such as an oatmeal or fatty acid based formula to soothe his skin. I hope this information helps!

I have a 5 month old pug/chi mix puppy. She has sores on her back by her tail. Ive checked het gor fleas and she doesnt have any. Bathed her and it is still bothering her.
Fleas are the most common cause of developing sores by the tail base. Some dogs are allergic to fleas where just a bite or two may cause them to itch excessively. This itching can damage the skin, resulting in a skin infection. Other environmental allergies, food allergies or mange may cause similar signs. At this point, I recommend taking Freya to her vet for further evaluation and treatment. Her vet can discuss options for high quality flea prevention (e.g. Nexgard, Comfortis or K9 Advantix II) and may need to prescribe a course of antibiotics if a bacterial skin infection is present. Until you get to the vet, try putting an e-collar (cone) on Freya to prevent her from causing further damage to her skin. I hope she feels better soon!
