Hi there! I'm so sorry to hear about Rufus' troubles. I'd definitely use some warm water and gently flush the eye the best you can. You can also use a cold compress to help with the swelling. Just gently apply it over the eye for 5 minutes at a time. I know you mentioned there aren't funds for a vet visit right now, but this honestly is what Rufus needs. His eye should be appropriately evaluated by a vet. There could be damage to the eye or a scratch or puncture that needs medication to heal. Rufus should also have some pain medications prescribed. A lot of veterinary practices will take care credit for payment. If that's something you can manage, it may be a good idea. For now, do your best to keep Rufus comfortable and keep the eye clean by gently flushing 2-3 times per day. I have sometimes recommended vetericyn ophthalmic solution for cleaning around the eye as well. You can find that on Amazon. A plastic cone or e-collar would be a good idea too so that Rufus can't scratch or rub at his eye. Best of luck!
