Why is my cat anemic, losing weight, and has a suspected mass?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | 1 year and 4 months old

Sonny has been very largatic recently and has lost a lot of weight. His blood results have come back as negative for feline aids and Leukaemia and his kidney function is normal. Temperature is also normal. He is however very very anaemic. The vet suspected they MAY have been able to feel a small mass internally in his lower abdomen. We have been advised that euthanasia asap may be the best option as he is so weak. Do you have any idea what else could be causing such anemia? Severe worms maybe?

A serious hookworm infection could lead to anemia, but your vet could have checked his feces for signs of hookworms if they felt that was the cause of his symptoms. You can ask the vet to do this for Sonny. but I would also be concerned if they may have found a small mass in his abdomen. You can do further tests such as an ultrasound, x-rays, or an abdominal exploratory surgery. See if the vet has other options for him. I'm very sorry he's so sick.
