My 57-day pregnant dog has thick white discharge. Is she in labor?

My female is black lab and little pitbull mix shes pregnant and 57 days. She has white kinda thick mucus coming out her vulva. It been doing this for 3 days now but a little more mucus today. Her vulva is really swollen. Her ears are a little less like warm but not cold. Theres time she acts a little weird. She looks at her behind through out the day.

This is likely the dissolution of the mucus plug. She will give birth within the next week and should start lactating soon. If the discharge looks like pus or has a bad smell. you need to take her to your veterinarian right away for an exam. Your vet can also take an x-ray and tell you how many puppies to expect so you know when she is done giving birth.

A white discharge is normal, especially in late pregnancy. Heavy breathing is also quite common, especially in the last few days of pregnancy. Make sure you feed her high quality puppy food in large quantities until the puppies are weaned.

Do you mean 53 days pregnant? Dogs are pregnant for 63 days /- a few. If you are seeing milk from mammary glands, then she is very close to labor. I would monitor her, give her a comfortable, warm, quiet place to be able to go to. Once she begins labor, they usually can do it all on their own. The problem to watch for is if she is actively pushing for 20-30 min without any progress. If that occurs, get her to the ER Right away. It is normal to have times of rest, and blocks in between puppies but in those natural times there is no active pushing. Good luck.

A moderate amount of clear, sticky vaginal discharge is normal for a pregnant dog, especially close to delivery of the puppies. The increased hormone levels cause an increase in the lubrication produced by the vagina. As long as there is no evidence of dark green color in the discharge, a milky or creamy appearance or foul odor no treatment is needed. It does not mean that she will give birth earlier.

This can be a normal discharge. She will start to nest, not eat as much and have some milk from her nipples when she is about to give birth. I cannot tell you if she is labor or not without examining her myself. If she is at 7 weeks then she is only at 49 days so I would not expect she is in labor but if she has vaginal discharge she may be having some type of complication. Did you make sure her vaccines and deworming were up to date before breeding her? Have you confirmed pregnancy with your vet so you know how many puppies to expect? This is normal leading up to birth. They are pregnant for 58-63 days so it will be any day since you notice a discharge with her days. If it is black or green then it is a problem and you should seek medical attention if noted.

I would be concerned that this white mucus discharge could be a sign of a pyometra, which is an infection of the uterus. I would have her checked out by a vet today. A pregnant dog will develop a mucus plug over her cervix, which keeps bacteria out of the uterus, protecting the fetuses. This plug is a whitish fluid resembling egg whites and should have no odor. In some dogs, the mucus plug causes a discharge throughout the pregnancy. Even though you described a perfumish odor I suspect this is what you are seeing. I don't know if your vet did this or not but I would suggest they take some of the discharge and look at it under the microscope. If there is a lot of white blood cells or bacteria that would be cause for concern. If your vets are not reproductive experts they can always call and consult with one.
