Why is my dog's groin rash not getting better with treatment?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed

Groin rash in a 14 month old Labrador cross bitch. She has been treated with antibiotics and hydrocortisone cream and flea/mange treatment. I have also changed her diet to wheat free dry kibble. No improvement as yet.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I'm sorry to hear Millie is having skin issues. Skin lesions like you are describing can be due to a variety of causes, including allergies, contact irritation, heat, an infection, or another underlying issue. While I do think a diet trial may be helpful, dogs typically are allergic or sensitive to proteins in food, not grains, so a switch in the protein basis of the diet (including all treats!) may be beneficial. I would recommend having it re-evaluated by a veterinarian, and further diagnostics (such as a cytology, which examines the skin under the microscope) done to determine what may be causing it, so a long-term plan can be made. Good luck!
