My cat is biting his nails. How do I safely clip them at home?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 2 years and 5 months old | 8 lbs

My cat keeps biting her nails like he wants to yank them off? I cannot afford to take him to the groomer right now and have never clipped them myself. What can I do?

If Romeo will allow it, you can clip the nails at home. I recommend to watch some videos on line. Have someone help you to hold him if possible. Most cats have quicks that appear pink within the nail. You will want to stay about 5mm away from the very end of the quick. Only cut the part of the nails that hooks. If you are uncomfortable, ask if your friends or family if they have any experience trimming cat nails. Be careful and don’t hurt him or yourself! I hope you find this helpful and please feel free to post any further questions.
