Is my new shelter dog's vomiting just a bug from the adoption?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pit Bull Terrier | Male | neutered | 1 year old | 49 lbs

My dog has vomited 4 times. Each time the amount gets smaller and clearer. He wants to still eat, play and poop. He has no blood, worms or other issues. He had red eyes and drooling the first day we got him on saturday. After vomiting it seems to have cleared up. He tries to eat his own poop, and other inedible things but we watch him and his vomit and poop is normal. no diarrhea he was burning up when we got him but now has cooled down. Is he just passing something from the shelter?

Hi there! I'm so sorry to hear about Kylo's issues. He could definitely have a little bug from the shelter. In addition if dogs are eating things that they shouldn't, they can get an upset stomach for sure. This can definitely last for a few days. I'd be concerned if it continues and have Kylo examined by a veterinarian. The vet can make sure he doesn't need any medications for his stomach or any diagnostics like Xrays or lab work.

It sounds as Kylo is suffering from a gastrointestinal condition, possibly an infection. it could also be due to ingestion of a foreign body material. i would recommend taking him to the vet the first chance you get, he will need to be checked first, if the vet thinks it's a simple gastrointestinal infection he will need an anti vomiting injection, antibiotics and a special food for a few days in order to get better.
