Why did my cat's newborn kittens die after birth? What happened?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Ocicat | Female | unspayed | 3 years and 10 months old | 6 lbs

My cat gave birth to her kittens while I was at work. I came home thinking she looked slimmer but saw no sight of them. An hour and a half ater she came out carrying one to me. I found her nest. Two were alive and two were dead. One was just cold and the other had it's intestines partially out. What happened? Could I have helped if I had been home? Was it simply complications, could she have chewed the cord too close to its body, could the father have killed the one? Depressed and confused.

I am so sorry you came home to two dead kittens! Newborn kittens are very fragile, and it could the one who was cold simply wasn't strong enough to make it. As for the one with the intestines out, it could be a birth defect causing the intestines to be outside the body. Without seeing them in person, I can't say for certain. I can say keep the father away from the kittens until they are older. Mother cats can be very protective of their kittens, and the father should not be around until the kittens are weaned. I hope this helps, and again I'm sorry for your loss.
