Adopting a Boxer mix: Is 41 lbs normal? What about leg/eye health?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Boxer | Male | neutered | 10 months and 27 days old | 60 lbs

Well, I’m interested in adopting this 11 month old boxer mix. He’s 41 pounds and it is kind of a concern to me. Is that normal? Also, his back leg in the picture looks like it was injured. Or is it just the way the picture was taken?? It looks like he’s a German Shepard/boxer mix. His eyes are also really red so I’m not sure what that means. He’s been in the shelter for a month now and I wanted to adopt him but just wanted some advice.

It's so difficult to tell from pictures alone, especially at the angles in these pictures but Henry does appear to be on the thin side. He is still growing at 10 months and many shelter dogs tend to be thin due to stress, previous poor nutrition and even parasites (although most shelters will give deworming medications). I really can't see his leg that well in the picture so it's difficult to say if he may have had an injury. I can see a little redness in his one eye, but this could be completely normal (or it could be a sign of a medical problem). I think it would be important to meet him in person and talk to someone at the shelter about your concerns prior to adopting him.
