Dog fleas: Is shampoo effective, and can I use Cortizone for itching?

Can I use flea & tick shampoo to get rid of the flea on my dog and use Cortizone cream on my dog to prevent itching?

Hello and thank you for your question about Royce. You can use the shampoo but there are much better options available. Shampoos only last for 24hrs. Fleas are in the environment and have a very fast breeding cycle so it’s hard to get rid of them using shampoo alone. Frontline is a decent product but there are better products such as Simparica and Comfortis. If you have fleas, you will need to use these for 6 months. Cortisone cream is not meant to be ingested and that is the main concern with pets is that they lick it or get it on their feet while scratching and then ingest it that way. You may try something more natural like a little coconut oil. Rub it into the area well and try to prevent him from getting to the area. If the spot does not improve within a week, take him into the veterinarian who will likely provide medications. I hope this was helpful. Feel free to post any further questions!
