Why does my cat aggressively dig litter out of the box after a change?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Female | unspayed | 11 months and 6 days old

Every single time i change the litter in the litter box, and there's completely new litter, my female cat mella keeps digging in aggressively throwing the litter outside the box. I try to take her out calmly of there since i don't want to scare her or make her feel it's wrong to go to the litter box, but she keeps going back. And i can't control it anymore i dunno what to do.

Hello. Some kitties are just very exuberant diggers, & perhaps Mella is just searching for a familiar odor that is removed with the new litter. I do not think you will be able to change her behavior, but you may help keep things neater by using a litter box with higher sides, or switching to a box with a cover. At least this way the litter stays in the box while she happily digs through it. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
