My hamster's eye hurts and he's squeaking. Should I take him to a vet?

My friend's hamster is over 2 years old, and he has a problem with his eye. He is squeaking in pain. I cant see him in person as they are miles away from me, but I want to help her, is there anything we could try?

Poor Simon! Unfortunately, there aren't any over the counter eye drops that would help him feel better. I think the best option would be for them to take him to a vet that sees hamsters. He could have a cut or ulcer on his eye that needs to be address. He may need some pain meds that are safe for hamsters and also some antibiotic eye drops depending on what the problem is. I hope this helps and he starts to feel better really soon!

    Thanks for reaching out about Yammy and including photos. Continue to monitor for growth and discomfort but will probably not self-correct. A veterinary visit is probably needed to remedy, could be ophthalmic antibiotics but might need to be lanced. Good luck.

Poor Squeak ! Has he had any antibiotics eye drops ? It might be some conjunctivitis or it could be a problem with his teeth as well. It would be best to have him checked over so that the best medicine can be prescribed for him. In the meantime, you can gently clean the eye with cotton wool and lukewarm boiled water.

Hi. I have just biught a new hamster three days ago. Today, I noticed that her eye has turned pinkish rimmed, and wet. It looks a bit like an infection. What should I do?(I'm sorry if the photos are a bit blurry. She is still getting used to me.)
It does seems as Silva is suffering from an eye infection, you will need to take him to your vet ASAP in order to get the eyes checked, he will most likely need antibiotic eyedrops for a couple weeks.

Poor Honey! He could have have injured his eye, and you need to take him into the vet immediately. Any eye problem should be considered an emergency because leaving it untreated can lead to vision loss. Best of luck.

It is hard to tell based on the picture alone what exactly is going on with Meeko’s eye. There is almost certainly inflammation and infection present. Since the drops do not seem to be addressing the problem I would recommend taking Meeko in for a recheck examination. If your hamster has an infection inside the eye (as opposed to the outside/surface of the eye) she may need an oral antibiotic to help her get over it. Other concerns for an eye like this would be a cancer of the eye itself. If this is the case, the eye could be removed and your hamster would do just fine. In any case, I would recommend having a recheck done by a veterinarian that is comfortable seeing hamsters. It’s only been a couple days so don’t worry too much. Hopefully the problem will be addressed at your recheck appointment and hamster will do great. I hope this helps. Thanks for using Boop by Petco. If you have anymore questions please let us know. Your poor little hamster! This looks like there was damage to the eye and needs to see a vet. They will give you eye meds and probably oral antibiotics to help this get better. After this amount of time, f it hasn’t gotten better on its own, it really needs the help of a vet to get there.

Although a picture of it would help to determine more specifically underlying cause, that is likely to be due to a mild to moderate conjunctivitis, probably secondary to a trauma or infection. A check up would be needed as appropriate treatment would include antibiotics and anti-inflammatory eye drops. No need for any special treatment, any vet can do it (and they cannot refuse to take her).Corneal injuries must be ruled out as well. It is difficult to say exactly what is causing Gordon's eye to be protruding without seeing him in person or a photo. This can be caused either by the eyeball itself being enlarged or something pushing the eyeball outwards from behind. The first case can be due to a very deep ulcer or a condition known as glaucoma, where excess fluid builds up in the eyeball. Something can be pushing the eye outwards, such as a mass or abscess (walled off infection). Gordon does need veterinary care to determine what is going on and begin the appropriate treatment. I recommend calling vet clinics in your area to see if they see hamsters. Some Petco stores may have a clinic associated with them. The red/brown staining you saw is likely porphyrin, which is a normal secretion from the tear glands, that is usually groomed off. The fact that it is present is an indication that Gordon is not grooming that side of his face as he should be. I hope this helps and that all is well!

Oh, wow, I looked at the picture and that looks really painful for your little Hammie. If he is swollen like that and having discharge, he really has to go to the vet and get some oral antibiotics and some special eye drops. He could lose his eye and really needs to have it looked at. You should not apply any human meds or any animal meds that are not prescribed for him. Certain ingredients could be toxic or they make the infection worse. In the meantime, you could try flushing it with a little bit of plain saline Eye Wash and using a cool compress or a wrung put cool wet washcloth to help with pain, swelling and reducing drainage.

Your hamster needs a visit to a veterinarian (there are vets that see hamsters) because he may need an antibiotic or other medication to treat his eye and skin. In the meantime, you can use a clean soft cloth wet with water held over the eyelid to hopefully loosen the crusting holding the eyelids together.
