Why does my cat have a black ring and uneven pupil dilation?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Longhair | Male | neutered | 10 lbs

Hello, This just started to happen to my cat, if you look at his left eye you’ll see a blackish ring around his pupil. His left pupil is usually never the same dilation as his right. He seems fine and we’ve always taken care of him over the years. No neglect but does this have to do with age? He’s about 5 or 7 years old max

That new pigment around Butter’s pupil is concerning for inflammation of the iris or melanoma. Cats can get uveitis (which is basically inflammation of the internal eye structures) for many different reasons. Hyperthyroidism can also sometimes change the pigment. Melanoma is a cancer that can affect the eye of a cat at any age. I recommend to make an appointment with your veterinarian. That will at least get you started on the right path. Fingers crossed it’s nothing serious! Please post again with any further questions.
