Why is my dog's nose still dripping after dental fistula surgery?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Female | spayed | 3.1 lbs

My dog just had dental surgery and had a oral fistula. Two days later she has discharge coming out of her nose. She had discharge before her surgery so I am wondering if it’s normal to have it after?

Hello. A fistula basically is an abnormal communication between 2 areas. In this case, the tissues surrounding the root of a bad tooth eroded into the nasal sinus. Until this tissue heals & fills in, drainage is possible. It should lesson day by day & Madison may need to be on antibiotics for a while, but the fistula should close up after a period of time ( depending on what tooth was involved & how big the fistula is.
