Penicillin for dogs: Should I inject IM or Sub-Q for my dog's safety?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pug | Male | unneutered | 12 years and 9 months old | 30 lbs

I was advised to give my dog penicillin g procaine, but I am not positive on the proper way that it should be administered. I read the bottles directions stating that it should be injected IM, but I was reading info about the medication online and many vets were advising pet parents to administer sub-q. I really don't want to do anything that could possibly harm my little guy, so I just need to know which is the proper way that it should be used.

Hello. Penicillin can be administered either way. If you do give it in the muscle, be sure to pull back on the plunger before injecting. If you see blood, move to another spot. Never inject penicillin into a vein. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
