My dog is acting weird, growling, and has diarrhea. Is he sick?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Pit Bull Terrier | Male | unneutered | 8 years and 7 months old | 80 lbs

My American Pitbull has been acting really weird the last few days. He has been sitting down growling for no reason and when I take him for a walk he's having diarrhea, I'm not sure if he's sick or something worse is happening. He is 8 years old which seems to be up there in age but not sure what's going on.

Thank you for your questions about King. The behavior you describe could be related to the GI upset or a problem in the anal glands. If King could only talk! Many things can make pet's have an upset stomach: parasites, new foods/treats, viral infections, eating something they shouldn't have, toxins, organ disease or even intestinal blockage. As long as King appears not to be distressed or severely ill, for the next 24 hours I recommend to feed King a bland diet of 25% boiled white meat chicken and 75% plain boiled white rice. Use this instead of his normal dog food and do not give him anything else. After 24 hours, if he is still sick, I recommend to take him into the veterinarian to check for other causes of illness. If he is doing better, continue the diet for another 24 hours. Then gradually introduce the normal diet. I hope this helps to point you in the right direction. Please feel free to post any additional questions!
