Why is my cat's hip sore? What causes cat joint pain and how to help?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | spayed | 3 years and 7 months old | 100 lbs

I took my cat to the vet today for her yearly checkup and the veterinarian told me that it seems that my cat has a sore hip because she always gets irritated when she gets petted around that area. The veterinarian told me to buy treats that help with that. I just wanted to know if there’s a reason that that occurs in cats and if there’s something else that I can do to get rid of that soreness. (My cat still run and jumps without any trouble)

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. 80% of cats over the age of 8 and 95% of cats over the age of 12 will have arthritis. Cats are just very good at hiding their pain. It is likely that Lychee just has arthritis which is normal. There are treats that have medications in them that help the body produce more fluid in the joints, these can help. If the arthritis becomes severe (you are noticing Lychee slow or sore at home), then you can use stronger drugs, but these do have side effects. If Lychee is overweight then getting her on a diet and increasing the muscle mass is the BEST treatment for arthritis. Best of luck with Lychee!
