My dog is whining after sedation for nail trim. Is this normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Staffordshire Terrier | Female | spayed | 12 years and 6 months old | 60 lbs

Hi. My dog was in for her checkup today and a nail trim. They sedated her in order to clip her nails since they were so long. That was 10 hours ago. Since getting home she is constantly whining. Should I be worried about this or is it normal? It’s quite unsettling for me to hear this and comforting her doesn’t seem to help all that much. I’m worried she is overly stressed or something is really wrong.

Dogs may feel strange for up to 24 hour or so after sedation or anesthesia, just like humans - so it's not uncommon for them to be restless, whining, or otherwise acting a bit unusual the evening after a procedure like this. Most are back to normal by the following day. :)
