My senior dog won't eat dog food after tooth extractions. What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Maltipoo | Male | neutered | 14 years old | 6 lbs

Since our dog Gus (13) had all but 9 teeth extracted in October turns his nose up to most of the food we offer him. When he first was out of the vet, gave him soft foods for a few days, he was accustomed to eating dry food & grazing. We have tried soft food prepared like shredded chicken with brown rice, store prepared soft foods with gravy, dried food remoistened. He will eat cut up cheese, cut up sandwich meats, left overs, I'm at a loss & worried if I don't give in to him he will get sick

It sounds like Gus may have gotten used to being a picky eater and so is holding out on you. I would try only offering him his food (either wet or prepared as normal) and then picking it up and trying again a few hours later if he doesn't eat it after about 15 minutes. You will also want to avoid giving him any extras, treats, people food, etc outside of his meal. If he still doesn't eat after a day or so, then it is possible he could still be not feeling very well, and a recheck of his mouth and gums would be best to make sure there isn't an infection, poorly healing extraction, etc, causing discomfort.
