Why is my dog getting diarrhea after boarding or grooming?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Australian Shepherd - miniature | Male | neutered | 12.5 lbs

Hello! My 2 year old male Mini Aussie Shepherd came back from boarding on a Monday and began having diarrhea and vomiting that following Saturday. I gave him chicken and rice and pancurC for 3 days and he was fine. He began eating his regular food with no issues. He went for a haircut yesterday and was fine. This morning he had diarrhea again and had another episode this afternoon. I’m not sure if he has worms or something more.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Bentley. He may be experiencing stress colitis which is diarrhea secondary to stressful events (ie. boarding, grooming, etc). When this occurs, it can resolve on its own, but other times a secondary bacterial imbalance develops in the gut. This can require an antibiotic to treat. Since the diarrhea has recurred despite your treatment at home, I recommend that he see his veterinarian. He will likely need fecal testing and a medication. I hope this information helps!
