My dog's knee is swollen after ACL surgery. Can I wait to see vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Yorkshire Terrier | Female | spayed | 7 years and 5 months old | 11 lbs

A 7 year old yorkie, about 11 lbs. Had acl surgery (the upper & lower bones where drilled & sutured together) 3 months ago. Everything has been fine until today. We noticed a soft swelling on the outer side of the knee, approx. 2 - 2.5 cm. She doesn't seem to know it's there - no limping, or discomfort that we can tell, even when we touch it or push on it lightly. Our vet is closed until Monday & the emergency vet is absolutely horrible & we would like to stay away. Can this wait until Monday?

As long as Zoe isn't limping (which means she is in pain) and the swelling doesn't get any bigger, you can wait until Monday. If she starts limping and/or the swelling gets bigger, then you will need to take her into the ER vet. Best of luck.
