Why do my dog's anal glands flare up after antibiotics? Is diet a cause?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Yorkshire Terrier | Male | unneutered | 10 years and 3 months old | 11 lbs

Gizmo is an 11lb, 10 year old Yorkie. He has had 3 flare ups of his anal glands within the last 3 months. I took him to the vet the 1st time and was told it's nothing big, just something that happens. My question is....is there something that is causing him to get them back to back, almost immediately after the antibiotics were taken? Are they like boils? Can a human cause him to have a flare up by transferring germs via bathtub if someone had a boil? Would a new diet help at all?

In most cases anal gland flair ups occur due to soft stools or allergies, the main thing that needs to be done is monitor the stools, if they are not firm enough it is recommended to ad a fiber supplement to the diet such as Pro Fiber.
