My dog was attacked by a wild animal, limping. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 1 year old | 85 lbs

My dog was attacked last night by what looks to be another animal. He was in a pen so we assume it was probably a raccoon. He is limping and yelps anytime he lays on the bad leg or stands on it. We noticed one slash that looks to be claw marks down his leg closer to his paw but the wound was not bleeding. When we got near it he did not whimper but we we got close to the very top of his leg he did. He stood over me while I was laying down and I did not notice any open wounds. He is a German/husky

Your dog needs to be seen by a veterinarian today for wound control, possibly an x-ray to determine whether there is a joint problem. If wounds are found (small puncture wounds, for example, your dog will need antibiotics. I hope your dog is up to date on his rabies vaccination.
