My guinea pig has a growing ear bump and hair loss. Is it serious?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Hello! I have a Guinea pig (approx. 1-year-old) which has a bump on the left ear for some time (just on the superior side). But the bump it continued to grow – right now it has approx. 1.5 cm in diameter; and comparing with the other Guinea pig, it looks like she is missing quite a lot of hair behind the ear. Your answer would help me to have an idea about what is the problem and if I could maybe use any farmaceutical product until I get her to a consult. PS. She is not lethargic. Thank you!

Thanks for reaching out about your guinea pig. Common ear masses are abscesses (infections) and benign wart-like growths. Due to the nature of guinea pig pus and its thickness, both these conditions probably will require some surgical intervention. Seeking a veterinarian and having the mass lances with a surgical blade will help diagnose the problem but also possible remove it. Good luck.
