My bulldog has congestion, dry skin, and hair loss. Is it allergies?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | English Bulldog | Male | neutered | 10 years and 8 months old | 55 lbs

My bulldog may have allergies to food. I went from fish to turkey and still grain free. He has congestion that he tries to clear out but doesnt break up the phlegm. I losmy job, my husband is sick and now a double amputee. I am only breadwinner so i cant go to vet. Is there an antibiotic for him without prescription? He has never been sick before. He also developed dry skin and some hair loss and scabs on skin but no itching. Thank you

I'm sorry you and Biggie are going through this. There isn't a non-prescription antibiotic that I'm aware of, and I probably wouldn't jump to that anyways for him from what you've said. The congestion could be caused by a virus or something more serious like something stuck in his nose or a tumor. It sounds like perhaps he's coughing as well, which would make me more concerned about heart or lung function. As far as his skin, that can definitely caused by allergies. Without going to the vet, you're a little stuck, and even going to the vet this sounds like quite a few issues that would require a number of tests to sort out. I would check to see if there are any public assistance programs in your area you might be able to take advantage of, or see if you'd quality for CareCredit. Wishing you the best of luck in this difficult situation.
