Why is my asthmatic cat lazy & not eating after starting prednisone?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Snowshoe | Male | neutered | 4 years and 9 months old | 11.7 lbs

My cat was diagnosed with asthma and just started taking prednisone 24 hours ago. Is it normal for him to be extra lazy? He is not very interested in eating or drinking either.

Hello, thank you for your question about Mitchell. Prednisone is a steroid medication and can cause a variety of side effects depending on the individual patient, so it is possible that the lethargy you are seeing could be secondary to this. It is also possible that Mitchell is experiencing mild exercise intolerance secondary to his asthma. I would recommend continuing to monitor Mitchell for the next 24 hours. If these symptoms continue or you notice any other concerning signs I would recommend having Mitchell seen by your veterinarian so that they can perform an examination and discuss the need for additional diagnostics. Hope this helps, good luck!
