Why is my female bird biting her cage after laying an unexpected egg?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Conure | Female | 2 years and 9 months old

My female bird was showing signs of having an egg in her but we weren’t expecting her to lay eggs in the winter. We got home and found an egg on the bottom of the cage. We asked a vet and they told us to put it in a nesting box where the parents could see it. (She has only laid one egg). Now she is biting the cage and hard things. Any explanations?

She could be stressed out from you removing the egg, or stressed out that you are attempting to handle it. If you are hoping to have her rear young, you can just place the egg back into the nest so that she can settle down. If the egg is not viable or you need to remove it, fake eggs can sometimes help with stress and give her something to sit on, or distracting with a toy or favorite treat can help get out her frustration on something safer than the cage bars or you.
