How to calm my male toad after new bedding and keep bowl clean?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Amphibian | Toad | Male | unneutered

I just bought some loose coconut fiber bedding. They used to just have dirt. After the change he began to try to escape to the female toad's habitat and hasnt calmed down. He is also getting the fiber grounds in his water bowl. Is there anything I can do to calm him down and also keep his bowl clean? Our female adapted just fine and doesnt get any in her bowl. I think its because he keeps jumping around and making a mess.

Thanks for reaching out about Q'Bert. Is there a visual blind between him and the female? If he can not see her, that might calm him down. Coconut fiver is not a normal substrate but is commonly used. It should be changed regularly to avoid fungal and bacterial overgrowth. Frogs can release pheromones, so separation of the male and female might require more distance. Good luck.
