Why is my hamster losing fur, weight, and has a black skin spot?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Hamster | Female | unspayed | 11 months and 2 days old | 0.5 lbs

My hamster is losing her fur on her shoulders and she's losing weight, she doesn't seem to be eating or drinking as much and where she lost fur has a black mark (may be a birth mark I've never seen her without fur)

Thanks for reaching out about Yoshi. The dermal lesions could be parasitic (mites), an infection (bacterial or fungal), or a contact allergy, among other things. A veterinary visit is recommended for a diagnosis and to prescribe a treatment. The black area could be a normal area where brown fat is stored for periods of hibernation. Good luck.
