How to prevent dogs from eating their poop without expensive pills?

How can I keep our two dogs from eating their poop? Is there something besides pills that I can give them? The pills are expensive, and I need to buy a LOT of them for two dogs. (They're old dogs, and they've been doing this for years).

Sadly, it's nearly impossible to stop this behavior, especially in older dogs who have been doing it forever. The only thing I have found that helps is to walk them instead of letting them be outside in the yard and carry an extra special treat that you give them as soon as they poop so they eat that while you quickly pick it up.
