Why is my cat lethargic and not using litter box after moving indoors?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Ocicat | Male | neutered | 4 years old | 10 lbs

I am making my cat an indoor cat and I've kept him inside today. He is 4 years old. The whole day he's been super lethargic and just sleeping all day pretty much. He hasn't gone to the bathroom in his litter box at all, I'm not sure if he remembers how to use it as he always goes outside. He is usually super meowy and playful, but not today. He is eating and drinking fine though. I was thinking maybe he is lethargic because he needs to poo but doesn't want to use his litter box. Is he ok?

I would give Ostin a few days to settle down and get used to being inside. If he hasn't used his litter box, bringing him to it so he can explore it, or bringing in a little substrate he prefers to go potty in (such as some dirt from the garden) and mixing it with the litter may make it more obvious to him where he needs to go. If he continues to act lethargic, doesn't use the bathroom at all, or shows other signs of illness, an exam with your vet is best to make sure there isn't anything else going on.
