My dog has Cushing's. Can we avoid ACTH stim test on Lysodren?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Jack Russell Terrier | Female | unspayed | 12 years and 3 months old | 13 lbs

My 12 year old Jack Russell Terrier has Cushing's disease. She's been receiving treatment for her disease and symptoms for a year now with Vetoryl (trilostane). We are looking at switching her to Lysodren (mitotane). Is there an alternative way of testing while on the Lysodren (mitotane) that does not involve the ACTH stim test? She had a bad reaction to it last time and it just about killed her. She has a large adrenal tumour that is not operable as well.

I am sorry Mouse is such a complicated girl! Unfortunately there is no way to test other than an ACTH stem test. If she responded terribly to this last time, talk to your vet about the urgency and need to perform the ACTH stem test. If she's well controlled on the Vetoryl, I'd leave it alone. Typically, Vetoryl is safer and better tolerated than Lysodren. Thanks for asking Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach!
