My cat's rear smells like garlic after being scared. Is it anal glands?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | European Shorthair | Male | unneutered | 6 months and 27 days old | 7.275 lbs

Hello, I have noticed that my cat's rectal area smells like garlic. This has started two days ago after the new years eve celebration when he was frightened by the fireworks. I did some research and found that they might indeed discharge their anal glands once frightened but I haven't seen anyone mention a garlic smell or the fact that it lasts up to two days. My cat is very clean and healthy (playful, eats and drinks and sleeps well) it's just that his rear smells like garlic. Any ideas? Thanks

I would not say that the secretions from the anal sacs generally remind me of garlic but I would also argue everyone interprets things differently. Since Eden seems normal in every other way, try washing off his rectal area and the under side of his tail to remove any secretions present. If the smell remains, his anal sacs may need to be expressed and your veterinarian may be able to do this pending Eden’s temperamental. I hope this helps and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
