Dog's neck still has scabs after mange treatment. Is it normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 8 months and 4 days old | 44 lbs

Rocket is being treated for mange. We've had 5 injections to date, plus 2 courses antibiotics and some allergy meds. His coat has generally improved, with good regrowth. But his neck is still blotchy with some scabs- could it be something else (on top of/ in addition to the mange)? Or are some zones likely to take a little longer? His sister does play/ nibble his neck and we have notices some play scratches, but we haven't attributed the hair loss/ blotchy scabs to this.

Hello. The best way to determine if there are issues are to re-scrape the skin in the area. This is an excellent way to see if there are any mites still alive or if everything is dead. If no live mites are seen, then it is just a matter of time for the skin to heal & all the hair to grow back in. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
