Why is my 8-year-old cat struggling to eat and pawing his mouth?

My 8 year old cat recently stopped eating dry food and when i give him wet food he acts like he cant swallow it like its peanut butter and paws at his mouth anything I give him chicken the same. What can i do. Pet's info: Cat | Maine Coon | Male | neutered | 8 years and 10 months old | 18 lbs
